West Lothian debt advice project builds on previous success
Thursday, Feb 14, 2013
A debt advice project that will help to prevent approximately 60 evictions a month has been launched after securing funding for three years.
The West Lothian Court Advice Project offers independent advice to people who are facing repossession or eviction due to mortgage or rent arrears.
The service builds on previous funding from the Scottish Legal Aid Board and is managed by West Lothian Council and Citizen’s Advice Bureau. The project offers a full range of services at court as well free independent money advice.
Colin Lancaster, director of Policy and Development at the Scottish Legal Aid Board, said the service was part of the Board’s 2012-15 grant funding activity, for which a total of £7 million has been made available. Of that, £4.8 million comes from the Scottish Government as part of its Making Justice Work Programme and £2.2 million from the Money Advice Service (MAS).
“I hope that the project is a great success and is able to succeed in its twin goals of keeping people affected by debt issues in their homes through timely referral to the project and intervention by project workers, as well as providing people with the advice and information they need to deal with their civil disputes,” he said.
The new project follows on from a smaller project the Board supported as part of its previous grants programme. It recognises that people are facing multiple problems which require different solutions and aims to prevent people’s problems coming to court through early engagement with clients and working with partner agencies to try and deal with the issues that make court action a possibility.
More information is available through the West Lothian Council Advice Shop. Full details on the launch are available in the press release issued for the launch.
