Use the client mandate form if you are making a Legal Aid Online application.
Remember that you are responsible for completing the application form.
You should ensure you get all the necessary information from your client, as the online system will not allow you to send an application without all the relevant details.
In complex circumstances, even if you are using a client mandate form, you may want to refer to a printed application form to ensure you collect all necessary information.
The client’s signature
A&A and criminal legal aid
For every online advice and assistance or criminal legal aid application you must use one of these methods to get your client’s signature and store this in your office. You do not have to send us a copy, but as part of our audits we randomly check that applications have been signed.
There are three ways to do this:
- printing, and getting the client to sign, the completed online application
- completing the online client mandate, and getting the client to sign a paper copy of this
- keeping the original signed paper application form.

Civil legal aid
For every civil case created online, when you submit the first application (SU or CIV/SOL), your firm must get and keep the client's signature using the Civil Online Mandate.
The solicitor must also sign the mandate and you must store the signed mandate in your office. You do not have to send us a copy, but as part of our audits we randomly check that applications have been signed. We may also ask to see the mandate as part of a financial eligibility enquiry.
