Scottish Government legislation introduces changes to financial eligibility and financial contributions in criminal legal aid

On 5 March 2013, the Scottish Civil Justice Council and Criminal Legal Assistance (Scotland) Act 2013 received Royal Assent. The legislation includes changes to financial eligiblity in criminal legal assistance and financial contributions in criminal legal aid. You can find out more about Act on the Bill pages of the Scottish Parliament's website.
 

 
Client contributions in criminal legal aid
 
Part II of the Act introduces financial contributions in criminal legal aid. Contributions currently already exist for advice and assistance, ABWOR and civil legal aid. The Part II measures are expected to be implemented in 2014. More information is available on the criminal contributions page

Contracting in criminal legal assistance

The Scottish Government has asked the Board to develop proposals for contracting with criminal legal aid suppliers. The Board is currently engaged in identifying a range of options that might meet the Government’s policy objectives. More information is available on the contracting page.
