The legal aid system is delivering a better service due to a wide range of improvements, important developments and higher performance in the past year. The report shows that there are many more developments to come, with the aim of helping people access justice.

ANNUAL REPORT 2001-2002

Legal aid makes a difference to help people access justice. The report shows how the Board is working with others to provide a more effective system for those who need it. It also reports how we are improving the quality of its service and performance, within an environment of fundamental policy changes and social justice initiatives.

Legal aid grants reach highest ever level as cost stays almost the same
More people than ever before have been able to access justice through legal aid as the overall number of grants of civil and criminal legal assistance have reached their highest ever levels in the past year, to over 425,000. But the gross cost of legal aid has remained almost unchanged, at £130.5 million, we announced on publication of this annual report for 2000/2001.

You can also view in pdf format previous annual reports, from our first report in 1987-1988. These have been scanned from printed documents and the file sizes are very large (around 6Mb) and may take some time to download. In some reports the scan quality is poor, and photographs have been removed to reduce the file size. You may therefore prefer to request printed copies of earlier Annual Reports - please contact us advising which report you wish.
