Job Description

We are currently recruiting for Head of Office in the Public Defence Solicitors’ Office (PDSO) based in Glasgow.

The PDSO is a national network of publicly funded solicitors operating from seven offices across Scotland providing criminal legal assistance. Operating as a direct service of the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB), we advise and represent clients eligible for criminal legal aid. As a business we are a highly ethical organisation offering a stable and secured career opportunity within the public sector. Our reward package includes among other benefits: competitive annual leave entitlement, flexible hours, remote working and a contributory pension scheme. We also offer our employees access to comprehensive learning and development opportunities and well-being support. More details about our benefit packaged is available in the full job description.

This exciting opportunity is perfect for an experienced criminal lawyer who is looking for a career opportunity in the public sector.

The ideal candidate will be an expert in criminal law in Scotland with years of experience in private practice or within public service. The post holder, besides being the lead solicitor, will have responsibility for overseeing and managing a team of five other solicitors, as well as administrative staff based in Glasgow.

The successful candidate should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage and lead the team. In your day-to-day office management responsibilities, you will lead all aspects of the office operations by developing the business within the national framework of the PDSO.

You will also take the lead in the most serious cases by providing advice and representation to clients who are subject to criminal investigations or criminal proceedings. By applying and adhering to practices, procedures and Codes of Practice, you will maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the PDSO. You also will build effective relationships with clients and key contacts through an appropriate approach by helping to raise and maintain the profile of PDSO in the area. As a head of the Glasgow office, you will represent the PDSO in its relationship with outside bodies such as other agencies and organisations within an interest in criminal justice.
