Many of you and your professional bodies have asked that we make regular payments to firms and counsel based on an average of your normal payments to keep cashflow going during this time, regardless of work done.
We do however have systems in place that could be used to make different kinds of payments if the Scottish Government want to use us as a means of supporting the legal aid sector so that you can continue supporting people with legal problems.
Any decision on whether to support specific sectors by different means is of course for the Government. That is a decision that will have to be taken in the context of the wider economic impacts of Covid-19 and the wider UK and Scottish Government response to those impacts.
For that reason, and while Government considers general or specific support for parts of the economy, my staff are putting considerable effort into securing and indeed improving, the effective delivery of our existing functions to help you continue to deliver much needed advice and representation.
