How to PVG register for the first time

To become PVG registered for the first time in order to become a duty solicitor to a child an online PVG application now requires to be submitted.

The Registered Body (in this case SLAB) will initiate the PVG application process by submitting an online application request to Disclosure Scotland on behalf of the applicant.  The following steps must be carried out by the applicant to enable us to submit an online application to Disclosure Scotland.

Step 1

You need to provide three forms of identification (ID) as part of the application process.  One form of ID needs to be photographic and one needs to contain the applicant’s Date of Birth (DOB) and current address.

The Compliance Manager of your firm should be asked to verify your ID.  This ID should be photocopied, verified by the Compliance Manager and these documents should then be scanned.

If you have a secure email address – cjsm.net – then please send an email to pvgschemeupdate@slab.org.uk.cjsm.net attaching/enclosing:

  • the verified copy ID,
  • an email address for the applicant, and
  • confirmation that you are a new PVG member.

Disclosure Scotland guidance is that you send this securely. If you do not have a secure email address you may wish to consider using a Zip file.  Please see more information on Zip file at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/zip-and-unzip-files-8d28fa72-f2f9-712f-67df-f80cf89fd4e5

When the documents have been secured an email should then be sent to brandal@slab.org.uk attaching/enclosing:

  • the secure and verified copy ID,
  • a phone number so we can contact you for the password to the secured document,
  • an email address for the applicant, and
  • confirmation that you are a new PVG member.

Step 2

Using the information provided in Step 1, the Counter-Signatory Officer at SLAB will prepare and submit the online PVG application to Disclosure Scotland.

Step 3

Disclosure Scotland will contact you by email and will provide you with a link to your online application.  You must complete and return your application via email within seven days of receiving the email from Disclosure Scotland.

Please note that payment of the applicable fee is now paid online.

Step 4

Disclosure Scotland will confirm to the Counter-Signatory Officer at SLAB that they have received the online application and that they have begun the assessment process.

Should there be any queries regarding the application, Disclosure Scotland will contact the Counter-Signatory Officer at SLAB.  The Officer will then contact you in order to resolve any issue.

Step 5

When a decision on the application is made by Disclosure Scotland they will email the Counter-Signatory Officer at SLAB and you with a decision.  A paper certificate is still issued to all parties.

When the application process is complete your identification documents will be deleted from our records.

Step 6

Once PVG certification has been obtained, your Compliance Manager can contact the Children’s Legal Assistance Team to add the your name to your firm’s duty solicitor list.
