Are you fair-minded and interested in making a difference?
The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) is looking for three non-solicitor members to join its Children’s Quality Assurance Committee.
We would like to hear from you if you have a successful background in the public, private or voluntary sectors. You should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work constructively as part of a team in a committee environment. You should also have the confidence to challenge and test proposals on decisions made by the committee, and the ability to devise pragmatic solutions thereafter.
Members of the judiciary, practising advocates and solicitors are not eligible for appointment as non-solicitor members to the committee.
The initial appointment is for three years. The time commitment is one virtual meeting every second month, lasting up to half a day (plus preparation time), as well as other occasional meetings as required.
This work is unpaid, but all reasonable out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Training will also be provided.
Further details are available from the Job Description and Person Specification.
Apply by midnight on Friday 20 November 2026.
Send a covering letter and a supporting statement of no more than 1,000 words to Tracy Brown at BrownTr@slab.org.uk.
Please also complete our Diversity and Monitoring form (which will be treated in accordance with the Data Protection Act and used as part of the selection process where it is lawful to take positive action).
In your supporting statement, explain how you meet the essential and desirable criteria in the job description. Include any past or current experience in the justice sector, the Children’s Hearings System, other child-focused work and/or peer review.
Examples in your supporting statement can come from any aspect of your life that you consider relevant. Wherever possible, we recommend using examples of recent events, ideally from the last few years.
Include details of two referees. Referees will only be contacted for the successful candidate.
A CV is optional, but you may include one if you feel it would strengthen your application.
We intend to hold interviews remotely on Microsoft Teams at the start of December. In your covering letter, please tell us about any dates or times during this period when you would be unavailable.
For any questions about the role or an informal chat, please contact our Children’s Assurance Coordinator, Tracy Brown, on 0131 240 1945.
